About the Course


The PGP programme will help students to appreciate fully the vital business roles played by finance, accounting, marketing, human resource management, international business management, production and operations management and information technology. In addition, graduates will be shown how the ever-changing business environment is influenced by political, legal, economic, social and technological factors on both at national and international scale. In level 1 students take subjects that are common to the PGP programme. This model gives students the flexibility to adjust their career choices if necessary.



The purpose of this course is to give students the skills that are in demand by companies today. In a complex and dynamic environment they will be able to identify changes in business requirements, and have the confidence to develop and implement new procedures to satisfy them. Students will be able to recognize the key characteristics governing a particular company and then identify the factors that are critical to its success.

The course curriculum, developed by the Institute of Management and Development, reflects the multiple requirements of today’s business world. The participation and support of full time and external lecturing staff, and a wide range of industries has made a vital contribution to the programme’s content.


Minimum Qualifications


A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline from a recognized Indian or foreign university. Candidates in the final year of bachelor’s degree course may also apply. They will, however, be required to furnish evidence of minimum qualification within 2 months of the commencement of the session. High proficiency in the English language. Foreign and NRI candidates, whose mother tongue or education medium is not English, are required to furnish their score in TOEFL

Careers


The varied and in-depth contents of the course means that graduate prospects and opportunities are virtually endless. Electives/Specializations in the final year give a good indication of the work a graduate is likely to do, for example management, finance, marketing, public relations, human resource, information technology, production & operations management and international business.

Typically PGP graduates enter the business world at junior management level in areas such as marketing, banking, accounting, human resource, international business, IT, production & operations level. Many of our graduates also work in the public sector. The course is designed to allow students to choose a functional area of business in level 2 such as marketing, HR, P&O, IT, International business, Finance: this is often a good indication of the type of work a graduate is likely to do.

The Post Graduate Programme (PGP) at the Institute of Management and Development is a natural extension and consolidation of the institute's experience, management education research and consultancy. It was taken up with a view to expand the range of activities as also to cater to the growing demand for professionally qualified young managers.

The Post Graduate Programme attempts to prepare global leaders who create, manage and lead effective change across diverse organizations.


The objectives of the course are:

  • To understand the social, economic, political, technological and ecological environment of modern society and their characteristic values.
  • To help students become effective leaders, who can achieve results which have the potential to transform organizations.
  • To inculcate values of integrity, justice, fairness and facilitate lateral thinking.
  • To develop a global mindset so that the future managers can address the challenges of global competition.


On successful completion of the programme requirements, a student is awarded an autonomous Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) Certificate from Institute of Management and Development, INDIA after first year i.e. 11 months. Level 2 offers a Post Graduate Diploma in the specialization period in one of the functional areas of Finance, Marketing, Human Resource, Information Technology, Retail, Banking & Insurance.


Pedagogy


Teaching methods at the Institute of Management and Development include - lectures, case studies, seminars, group discussions, self managing teams, business games, role plays, simulation exercises, structured and unstructured group work and field/industrial visits. The emphasis is on involving the students in learning and helping them to relate concepts and theories to business requirements. Consistent with advances in teaching technology, the programme integrates the use of computers in learning the basic principles in different functional areas of management. It also enables students to acquire skills in identifying and dealing with complex problems in management. The students also undertake several field-based projects so that they can get better insights into the business workplace reality. The curriculum is revised on an ongoing basis through discussions with practicing managers from the industry to reflect current business needs.


Programme Structure


The core curriculum teaches you the ability to communicate, analyze situations and take decisions using qualitative and quantitative factors, develop a holistic view of the different functional areas and the business environment. During this period students take courses in general management and major functional areas, such as finance and accounting, marketing, operations management, organizational behaviour, human resource and strategic management. They are also exposed to the basic disciplines of economics, behavioral sciences, information technology, quantitative methods and decision sciences.


Corporate Internship / Training


The students go for an industry internship or summer training with an organization. The internship usually spans over an eight to ten-week period. This is a compulsory component of the curriculum for the completion of the programme and is designed to provide exposure to organizations working, develop an understanding of business realities and an opportunity to apply tools and techniques to real life business situations. The Summer Internship (SIP) is evaluated by the organization. In Level 2, the students take elective/optional courses and can specialize in a maximum of two functional areas. These areas are - Finance, Human Resource Management, Information Technology Management, Marketing, International Business, Retail or Banking & Insurance. All concentration packages however may not be offered, as this would be determined by the number(s) of students showing interest in majoring in the different areas. The Institute may also consider new electives in line with recent developments and availability of expertise to offer the same.
